SSL Certificate FAQ: Plain-English Answers

6 min read · Updated 22 Oct 2026

Short, accurate answers to the questions we're asked most, updated for today's certificate lifetime: up to 200 days now; up to 100 days from 15 Mar 2027; up to 47 days from 15 Mar 2029.

What is an SSL/TLS certificate?

It's a small file installed on your server that lets browsers encrypt traffic between your site and its visitors and confirm the site is the one it claims to be. It's what turns http:// into https:// and shows the padlock.

Do I really need one?

Yes. Browsers mark plain HTTP sites as "Not secure", search engines favour HTTPS, and payment and login pages effectively require it.

DV, OV or EV: which do I need?

DV proves domain control (fast, fine for most sites); OV and EV also verify your organisation (for business and high-trust sites). Encryption is the same for all three. See DV vs OV vs EV.

How long does issuance take?

DV is usually issued within minutes after validation; OV takes 1–3 business days and EV 3–5 business days, for organisation checks.

How long is a certificate valid?

A certificate can be valid for up to 200 days now; up to 100 days from 15 Mar 2027; up to 47 days from 15 Mar 2029. If you buy a year or more, you reactivate free before each expiry until your plan ends.

One domain, subdomains, or many domains?

Use a single-domain certificate for one site, a wildcard for all first-level subdomains of one domain, or a multi-domain (SAN) certificate for several different domains.

What if I need to change the certificate later?

Reissues are free and unlimited for the certificate's life, for a new key, a new server or a domain fix. See how to reissue.

Can I get a refund?

Eligible certificates carry a money-back window. If you qualify, we refund the eligible amount (usually the full amount) via a credit note, subject to our refund policy and the CA's cancellation window.

How do I pay, and is it secure?

Card details are handled by the payment gateway and never reach us.
